Pep Guardiola admits injured Man City star could miss Club World Cup knockouts

Manchester City bagged a 6-0 victory against Al Ain in their second match of the Club World Cup on June 22 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Man City have already advanced into the Round of 16 of the competition with two victories in the group stage and another upcoming game in hand.

However, there is some bad news for Pep Guardiola’s side as they will be missing one of their stars, Claudio Echeverri, in action due to injury.

Echeverri netted his first goal for Man City in the match against Al Ain. The 19-year-old found the back of the net with a stunning free-kick in the 27th minute, but then suffered an ankle injury that forced him off the pitch in the second half.

Now, ahead of Man City’s last group stage clash in the Club World Cup, Guardiola has provided an update on Echeverri’s injury.

What did Man City boss Pep Guardiola say about Claudio Echeverri’s injury?

Guardiola stated (comments via City Xtra) that Echeverri is expected to be sidelined for the next two to three weeks. This means that the Argentine star would miss the upcoming knockout matches in the Club World Cup, and there is a strong possibility of being ruled out for the entirety of the competition.

“He [Echeverri] has some problems in the ankle… It will be two weeks, three weeks out. We feel so sorry for him, all of us! But we’re going to play new players, and in the next game, too… And in the second-half, too,” said the Catalan manager.

“I’ve made the selection tomorrow, the line-up thinking in the second-half, because with these conditions we’re not ready to play the rhythm we’re playing for 90 minutes. So hopefully we’re going to make more substitutions, but it’s fine!” concluded Guardiola.

Man City will lock horns with Juventus in the last group stage match of the Club World Cup on June 26, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
