Pep Guardiola admits he could retire once Man City contract ends

Pep Guardiola was appointed Manchester City’s head coach in 2016, and the rest is history.

The Catalan manager has led to club to 18 trophies, including five Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, two FA Community Shields, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup.

With all his achievements during his ongoing nine-year managerial tenure at the Etihad, one can say Man City’s success in recent seasons is synonymous with Guardiola.

Guardiola’s initial contract with Man City was set to expire by the end of the ongoing season and uncertainties about his future at the Etihad surfaced. However, the Premier League giants signed a two-year contract extension with the manager, ensuring his stay until the summer of 2027.

While the new deal put Cityzens’ minds at ease for the time being, there is always the question of what’s next. And now, Guardiola has revealed his plans following the end of his current contract with Man City.

What did Pep Guardiola say about his future after Man City stint?

Guardiola is widely recognized as one of the greatest managers of all time and his achievements across clubs and leagues definitely point to it. He started his managerial career with Barcelona’s B team, and then moved up to their first team, followed by Bayern Munich and Man City.

Speaking about his future, Guardiola told ESPN Brasil as part of the second series of “Premier League Encounters” on Disney+ that he is ‘going to stop’ after his managerial tenure at City comes to an end. He clarified that he does not know if he will retire but confirmed that he will take a break.

“I want people to remember me however they want. After my contract with City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure. I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don’t know,” he said.

The 54-year-old also stated that there are ‘new challenges as a coach’ and he is unsure of what the future holds.

“All coaches want to win so we can have a memorable job, but I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play. I don’t think we should ever live thinking about whether we’re going to be remembered,” he added.

“In the careers of coaches, there are good and bad ones, the important thing is that the good ones are remembered for longer. I’ll tell you that the most important thing is not what people think of you, after all, our lives as footballers have been very good. There are new challenges as a coach, I don’t know what will happen in the future and in the end that doesn’t matter,” concluded Guardiola.

In his ongoing 18-year managerial career, Guardiola has won a total of 39 trophies. While he has put an end date to his journey at Man City, it remains to be seen how much longer we will witness the tactician in action.
