History of Pittsburgh fans falling at games

Just days prior to the Pemguins incident, a worker fell from the scoreboard at Acrisure Stadium. A few months before, a fan fell at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game.

Fan falls at PNC Park

Twenty-year-old Kavan Murkwood was attending a Pirates game in April 2025. He was celebrating a two-run double by Andrew McCutchen when he fell over the outfield wall and plummeted about 20 feet onto the warning track. Murkwood lay motionless before medical staff rushed to his aid and transported him to a local hospital. He was in critical condition but has since recovered.

When he was approached for comment more than a week after the event, he said he had “broken everything.” Murkwood had sustained fractures to his neck, clavicle and back. He did say at the time that he was “all right. I can’t really sleep. I have a lot of back pain.” Months later, Murkwood said in a recent interview that he still doesn’t have feelings in two of his fingers. He did progress in his recovery enough to throw out the first pitch at a Pirates game in September.

Worker falls at Acrisure Stadium

Nearly six months after the fan fell at PNC Park, a worker fell at Acrisure Stadium. The game followed the University of Pittsburgh playing NC State and the worker was installing production equipment. The man has not been identified, but reports suggest that he fell 50 feet from the main scoreboard to a mid-level catwalk.

Medical responders were able to get to him, stabilize him and help lower him down to a waiting ambulance. The latest update is that the fan is in critical condition.
