Patriots’ Will Campbell was honoring late Kyren Lacy with draft outfit choice

The New England Patriots selected Will Campbell with the fourth overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. The new offensive tackle spoke on his choice to honor a teammate who passed away recently.

Campbell was seen wearing a No. 2 pin on his lapel during the draft. The number represents Kyren Lacy, who passed away recently. Lacy was expected to be drafted this year as well and played with Campbell at Louisiana State University. However, on April 13 he died in an apparent suicide in his car while being pursued by authorities, according to ESPN.

Campbell honored his former teammate, who will never get to achieve his goal of being drafted. He spoke on Lacy during his post-draft press conference.

“Kyren is a special human being. I feel for his family. They’ve been through a lot lately. He’s got such a great family. He was not only a good football player. He was such a good teammate, a good son, a good older brother and just a good dude in general,” Campbell said.

“It’s just terrible, everything that’s happened. I’m sending many prayers to his family because he was gonna get his name called this weekend. … Even though his name won’t be called, he’s going to walk across that stage. He’s here with us in spirit, and it was an honor to be a part of his journey.”
