Patriots have easy way to cut ties with $36 million star after drafting TreVeyon Henderson

TreVeyon Henderson might be the future of the New England Patriots’ running back room.

In fact, the Ohio State star might be the present, too.

That leaves the Pats with a key decision looming after Henderson’s rookie season: What to do with Rhamondre Stevenson?

They gave him a four-year, $36 million contract, but he’s already on the verge of being expendable.

The Athletic’s Chad Graff thinks New England would be just fine getting rid of Stevenson if it came to that.

“The Patriots don’t really have an obvious contract problem, either in terms of potential holdouts or deals that must get done,” Graff writes. “Instead, let’s look toward the future. They gave Stevenson a four-year, $36 million extension last summer (which is just kicking in this year), a deal that already looks foolish after his struggles last season. Then they drafted running back TreVeyon Henderson in the second round, giving them an out to move on from Stevenson after the season if he struggles. That’s going to make this an important season for Stevenson.”

Part of the ease that would exist in moving on from Stevenson is that he already looked to be in clear decline during the 2024 season.

If he doesn’t show any bounceback on the field, New England won’t fear any regret on a cut.

If Henderson happens to not look ready and Stevenson looks better, that changes things. But until that happens, the end may be looming for Stevenson.
