Patriots could swing risky trade for former first-round pick

The New England Patriots made it a point to add weapons for their Pro Bowl quarterback this offseason. They signed Stefon Diggs and drafted Kyle Williams. Could they swing a trade for more help?

When Mike Vrabel was head coach of the Tennessee Titans, the team traded away AJ Brown and drafted Treylon Burks with the 18th overall pick in the draft. Burks has dealt with an array of injuries in his career, but FanSided’s Sara Marshall suggested the Patriots could trade for him.

“Most of that can be blamed on multiple injuries sustained during his short career, which certainly make him a questionable signing,” wrote Marshall. “However, as we’ve seen so far this offseason, Vrabel enjoys bringing in players he has previously worked with, and Burks would be no different. Given that he will know what he is capable of more than most in the league, he might be willing to take a risk by signing or trading for Burks if he becomes available.”

Burks has just 699 receiving yards in three seasons. He has scored one career touchdown. However, the Titans have been wildly inconsistent at quarterback since 2022. Perhaps a clean bill of health and Drake Maye could unlock some of Burks’ potential. He would not be an acquisition that the Patriots would expect to start, but could still contribute.

“Because of his age and potential, he would be a solid addition to the receiving corps if he can stay healthy,” wrote Marshall. “If he can prove he can be an asset, he could easily take a roster spot from some of the more questionable players on the Patriots roster, like Javon Baker, Kayshon Boutte, and Ja’Lynn Polk.”

Burks had surgery to repair a loose ACL last year. He has played in just 27 games in his career. A change of scenery and fresh start could do him plenty of good.
