Patriots blockbuster trade idea lands Eagles $51 million free agency disappointment

The New England Patriots have had an active offseason to this point, but more moves could still be coming.

Early in free agency, the Patriots made several splashes, scooping up quality players like Milton Williams, Carlton Davis, and Harold Landry. But their roster is still full of holes, and they could explore several avenues to plug those.

Could a trade for a disappointing edge-rusher from the defending Super Bowl champions be on the table?

When the Philadelphia Eagles paid $51 million for edge-rusher Bryce Huff for a three-year contract, they likely expected a lot more than eight pressures and 2.5 sacks in 12 regular-season games. Huff got a Super Bowl ring out of the deal, but he could now be expendable.

Brend Buchmasser of Pats Pulpit believes Huff is a realistic trade target for the Patriots this spring, due to the still-high amount of cap space they have in reserve after their early free-agent spending spree.

“The Patriots having chunks of money available, plus one of the most valuable draft portfolios in the league this year, means that they are realistic candidates to get involved on the trade market,” Buchmasser wrote regarding the general possibility of a trade.

“While they will once again not try to overspend, this will be the primary avenue to get veteran difference-makers onto the roster moving forward.”

Huff is still only 26 (27 in April) and he’s a year removed from a 10-sack, 33-pressure season with the New York Jets that earned him that big contract. Certainly, Philadelphia is under no immense pressure to lose him, but they could try to use the money they save elsewhere.

A Huff bounceback in New England could be a massive boost to the Patriots’ goal of crawling out of the cellar in 2025.
