During the 2024 MLB Draft, the San Diego Padres selected LHP Kash Mayfield after making a name for himself as an Oklahoma high school player. He went on tw be a two-time Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024 and has pitched well down the stretch.
Coming off a career-high nine-strikeout game on August 27, Mayfield has been dominant throughout his last three starts. During that span, he has given up just two runs while striking out 21 batters, and Sports Illustrated’s PJ Potter argues he should take the next step in his development..
“Obviously, the Padres do not need to rush Mayfield in his development process. However, if he is in line to start the 2026 season with Double-A San Antonio, the club may as well let him get settled in with the team now. There are about two weeks of games left in the Double-A regular season, which would give Mayfield about two starts at that level.”
Diving into what makes Kash Mayfield great
Kash Mayfield is a tall left-handed pitcher who can repeat his delivery consistently. His fastball has touched 97 mph with some armside run, and he has a great changeup to play off that fastball. His changeup is considered his best pitch. Mayfield also possesses a slurvy breaking ball, which he is continuing to improve.
He has a good command of all his pitches, which he demonstrated in high school. Mayfield has the potential to be a core member of this San Diego rotation in the future if he keeps developing like he has over his last few starts.
