Padres to part with All-Star closer after landing Mason Miller?

The San Diego Padres, who currently lead the NL West, made a massive pickup at the trade deadline at the end of July, snagging Athletics closer Mason Miller on the final day, another fun day at the office for San Diego general manager A.J. Preller.

However, adding Miller could to the team could force Preller to make a nail-biting decision.

Mason Miller or Robert Suarez?

According to CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa, he believes that Suarez will make it an easy decision for Preller, and he’ll essentially walk before he gives San Diego a chance to.

“Suarez can opt out of the final two years and $16 million remaining on his contract after this season and seems like a good bet to do that,” Axisa wrote.

A two-time All-Star in 2024 and 2025, Suarez currently leads the major leagues in saves, with 33, striking out 53 batters in 51.1 innings pitched and a 4-4 record.

Combined with the Athletics and Padres, Mason Miller holds a 3.71 ERA with 21 saves and 71 strikeouts in 43.2 innings pitched.
