Padres’ Mike Shildt reveals personal beef with Dodgers’ Dave Roberts

After a pitch hit San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. against the Los Angeles Dodgers, both benches cleared. At the center of the benches-clearing incident were the managers for both teams, Mike Shildt and Dave Roberts.

Roberts was seen pushing Shildt amid the scuffle, and after the game, both had strong words on the incident. But the next day, before suspensions were levied, Shildt was talking with reporters in the dugout about his beef with Roberts following Tatis getting hit by a pitch. Marty Caswell of Sporting Tribune shared Shildt’s comments on Twitter/X.

“There’s some history that’s very public, ” Shildt said. “With what happened last year, with Manny, that I took exception to. So I handled that very privately. This has got to be more public. Anybody who takes the steps that I feel are inappropriate against our team, then I’ll take action.”

The Padres saw both their superstars, Manny Machado and now Fernando Tatis Jr., be at the center of conflicts with the Dodgers in recent years. Shildt, after this latest issue with Tatis, is fed up. While he doesn’t normally handle things publicly, this situation has been public from the start.

His actions in defending his players are evidence that he’s fed up with the Dodgers, and potentially Roberts specifically. With this not being the first time that the Dodgers, under Roberts’ leadership, have hit one of the Padres players, it’s no surprise that Shildt is fed up.

While there will be sanctions from the league, taking matters into his own hands is something that Shildt alluded to. HE previously warned the Dodgers and Roberts, along with the rest of the league, right after the game on Thursday, but his new comments elaborate on his frustrations.

He’s not afraid of getting his hands dirty or speaking up for his players. This isn’t the first time that a Padres player has been hit by a pitch against the Dodgers, nor will it be the last. But, Shildt is warning the league, and especially Roberts, that any action taken against his players will be met with action of his own.
