Padres’ Mason Miller put together a feat rarer than a no-hitter

Mason Miller was one of the hot commodities available in the MLB trade deadline this year, and the San Diego Padres won the sweepstakes for the flame-throwing closer as they continue to stay right on the Los Angeles Dodgers’ tail for the NL West crown.

And Wednesday night, Miller showed why he was a favorable pickup, striking out three Baltimore Orioles on nine pitches, otherwise known as an immaculate inning.

Miller struck out second baseman Jeremiah Jackson, designated hitter Ryan Mountcastle, and third baseman Emmanuel Rivera in the Padres’ 7-5 loss.

Miller is the Second Padres Pitcher to Accomplish the Feat

Only a month after joining the Friars, Miller becomes just the second pitcher in San Diego history to throw an immaculate inning, the other one being Brian Lawrence on June 12, 2002, which was also thrown against the Orioles.

Miller’s perfect inning was the 117th immaculate inning in major league history, and the flamethrower was the 108th different pitcher to accomplish it.

Sandy Koufax, Chris Sale, and Max Scherzer have each thrown three immaculate innings, all tied for the most in a career.

With their loss to Baltimore, the Padres sink to 76-64, still three games behind their rivals for the lead in the National League West.
