Padres linked to NL MVP candidate in free agency

The San Diego Padres have quite the star-studded roster, but in the offseason, they could make even more decisions. Having made trades for Juan Soto, Mason Miller and Dylan Cease, in addition to signings like Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts, Padres general manager A.J. Preller is no stranger to big moves. Signing Kyle Schwarber from Philadelphia may be his next.

MLB and ESPN insider Jeff Passan linked Kyle Schwarber to the Padres this upcoming offseason. With the season he’s having, any team would be happy to bring in Schwarber next year. Passan also cited the Rangers, Astros, Braves, Reds, and Tigers as teams that could be interested in signing Schwarber. Of course, the Philadelphia Phillies will be hopeful to retain his services.

Thus far, in 2025 Schwarber ranks second in home runs and first in RBIs through 141 games. Schwarber has walked 93 times and has tied a career high with 10 stolen bases. Schwarber’s totals of 49 home runs and 119 RBIs make him a front-runner for National League MVP, contending with perennial candidate Shohei Ohtani.

Although Schwarber does not offer much in the field, the Schwarber would be an uprade over nearly any MLB player at Designated hitter. Over his career, he’s compiled 19.6 WAR, 1,033 hits and 333 home runs. Despite struggling in his first two years in Philadelphia, leading the league in strikeouts in 2022 and 2023 while batting below .200, Schwarber has bounced back quite strongly  providing over 3.5 WAR in his last two seasons and hitting over .240.

Assuming that Schwarber continues his development into a “complete” hitter, he’ll upgrade the offense of any team he signs with this offseason.
