Padres’ Jose Iglesias, Xander Bogaerts disciplined over Wild Card actions

The San Diego Padres’ season ended a bit earlier than they had hoped. After battling to secure a postseason spot, they matched up with the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card, but Chicago proved to be too much for them.

After losing the first game, they were able to tie the series at one apiece, sending it to a win-or-go-home Game 3. However, this game would end in controversy as the Padres felt home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn wronged them.

Reyburn called a strike three call on Bogaerts in the ninth inning that appeared to be out of the zone. Bogaerts proceeded to argue the call while manager Mike Shildt came out to have his player’s back.

The real fireworks came afterward when the umpiring crew headed through the Padres’ dugout to exit the field. Both Bogaerts and Jose Iglesias gave the crew a piece of their mind as they exited.

There was no denying the strike three call was a crucial one. It led to the Cubs advancing to the NLDS and the Padres’ season being over. However, Iglesias and Bogaerts’ actions afterward were deemed unacceptable by Major League Baseball. According to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, the two have been disciplined by the league.

“Iglesias received a one-game suspension for ‘his unprofessional conduct’ toward the umpires. In addition, Iglesias and Bogaerts each received an undisclosed fine for the same reason. Pending a potential appeal, the suspension of Iglesias – who can file for free agency this winter – will be scheduled for his first day as an active major leaguer during the 2026 season.”

Iglesias received a suspension for his role, while both players received an undisclosed fine. Both players can appeal, although typically, appeals are reserved for suspensions. Iglesias could appeal his suspension, but given the situation, it won’t be easy to have that overturned.
