Padres announce recall of pitcher acquired in Mason Miller blockbuster

The San Diego Padres were very active at the trade deadline, acquiring talent at every position they could need. Of their trades, the biggest one was the deal to acquire Mason Miller from the Athletics.

As a part of that deal, starting pitcher JP Sears also came to the Padres, though he wasn’t the most notable part of the deal, as Miller and Leo De Vries were the headliners. But now, he’s an important piece of the Padres rotation.

Ahead of their series finale against the San Francisco Giants, the Padres announced that Sears is being recalled to the Major Leagues and getting the start for his second outing in a Padres uniform.

Sears is Back in the Majors

As part of the roster move to bring Sears back up to the Majors, the Padres are optioning right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio to Triple-A El Paso. Marinaccio appeared in one game for the Padres, a two-inning scoreless outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sears, meanwhile, also only has one outing with the Padres, but it wasn’t the best. Against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Sears went five innings, allowing 10 hits with five earned runs and four strikeouts.

In the season before coming to the Padres, Sears had a 4.95 ERA in 22 starts and 111 innings pitched with 97 strikeouts and 29 walks. He had an 85 ERA+ with the Athletics, 15 percent worse than the league average pitcher.

While he hasn’t been the best, Sears will be a nice addition to the rotation amid the injury to Michael King and the uncertain starts from Nestor Cortes and Dylan Cease.

Before getting back up to the Majors, Sears had one outing in the minor leagues. He went five innings, except this time he allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Sears will get the start against the Giants, as he looks to bounce back from a rough first start with the Padres. The Padres will also look to take the series lead and stay within striking distance of the Dodgers before a pivotal weekend series in San Diego.
