Packers’ wide receiver logjam could be solved by trade following retirement

The Green Bay Packers aren’t in must-move territory.

They could head into the season with their top six receivers, four veterans and two rookies, on the roster (or on IR, potentially).

Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are the vets. Matthew Golden and Savion Williams are the rookies.

That list does leave off Bo Melton, the wideout who has spent some time at cornerback.

But there is another option, which was floated in multiple places including Lombardi Ave, on Thursday.

The Packers could trade a wide receiver to the Los Angeles Chargers. They just lost Mike Williams to retirement on the first day of their training camp, thinning out the depth chart.

The most frequently pitched trade candidate this offseason has been Doubs, but it wouldn’t have to be him.

If the Chargers were willing to give up more assets for a different one of the veteran receivers, Green Bay would be wise to consider that, too.

The Packers have put themselves in a position of strength, and the best way to take advantage of that surplus is to use it to grow the rest of the roster.
