Packers surprisingly warned to avoid 49ers’ Pro Bowler in free agency

The Green Bay Packers definitely need some help at the cornerback position this offseason, as Jaire Alexander appears to be on his way out, and the Packers have very limited talent at the position otherwise.

Fortunately, the Packers are loaded with cap room heading into free agency, so they should be able to splurge on the cornerback position, especially with so many good ones hitting the open market.

One obvious name to monitor is Charvarius Ward, who spent the last couple of years with the San Francisco 49ers and may very well be the best defensive back available next month.

However, Rucker Haringey of FanSided actually thinks Green Bay should avoid Ward in free agency, noting how the 29-year-old’s production slipped this past year.

“Some team is going to pay Ward like an above-average starter but the Packers should be looking for safer options,” Haringey wrote. “His struggles in 2024 should cause them to spend their money elsewhere at corner.”

It’s true that Ward wasn’t great in 2024, as he registered 54 tackles and seven passes defended in 12 games. However, he is just two seasons removed from racking up 72 tackles, five interceptions and 23 passes defended, which resulted in a Pro Bowl selection and Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2023.

It should also be noted that the Middle Tennessee State product dealt with some very severe off-the-field problems this past year, as his one-year old daughter sadly passed away.

When he is right, Ward is definitely one of the league’s best corners, so the Packers definitely wouldn’t be wrong to pursue him.
