The Green Bay Packers are looking to continue making moves to strengthen their Super Bowl chances. They already have an offense capable of making a deep run—if everything falls into place. Still, there’s always room for improvement, and a new opportunity may have just emerged.
On Monday, the Dolphins and Steelers completed a trade that could open the door for the Packers to add a new tight end. The deal has also sparked debate around Steelers GM Omar Khan and the risks involved.
“That being said, trading a beloved star, and the heart and soul of your defense in exchange for a great, but also aging superstar and a TE is a risky move from Omar Khan. Jonnu Smith is a good player, and he will make the offense better, but this a TE #2 we are talking about after all. So in the end, it’s a good move for the Steelers on paper. But if Ramsey doesn’t produce and the team falters, it’s going to get hot in the kitchen for Khan,” A to Z Sports’ Rob Gregson wrote.
The move brings in Jonnu Smith as the Steelers’ No. 2 tight end, which now creates an uncertain path for third-year tight end Darnell Washington. A to Z Sports’ Wendell Ferreira believes the Packers should take advantage of the situation and pursue the young talent.
“Gregson’s point would also apply to the Packers to some degree. He would also be the third tight end, behind Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave. However, Gregson projects a late Day 3 pick as a fair compensation, so it’s a low-risk, decent-reward type of move,” Ferreira wrote.
Washington would likely hold a similar depth role in Green Bay, but he could see more playing time and be a valuable rotational piece. He would also provide important insurance in the event of injury. The Packers reportedly had interest in Washington during his draft year, so a reunion now would make sense.
