Packers reveal plan to turn wide receiver into a two-way player

The Green Bay Packers’ surprise minicamp plan received some new clarity on Wednesday.

Wide receiver Bo Melton was spotted earlier in the week taking reps at cornerback. But Melton isn’t switching to CB.

Rather, the Packers are seeing if Melton can be a two-way player, which would allow them to use one roster spot on essentially two different guys.

“It’s just something that came up,” Melton told Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. “I want to give it a shot. I’m still a wide receiver, so I’m not really transitioning to no cornerback, but if it works, it works.”

Melton’s brother Max is a cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals.

Bo also played cornerback briefly at the start of his Rutgers career.

The Packers have tons of wide receivers, including the veteran quartet of Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and Jayden Reed. They’ve also got rookies Matthew Golden and Savion Williams.

But after releasing cornerback Jaire Alexander, they’re thinner at that spot.

That’s why Melton is looking to try both.

“There are very few guys who have done it in our league,” GM Brian Gutekunst said. “There have been a few and when a guy’s able to do that, it certainly helps your football team. Bo is everything we want in a football player out there as far as his ability as a receiver, certainly on [special] teams. If he’s able to add to his arsenal, that makes him really, really valuable to us.”

Melton made sure that there weren’t any Travis Hunter comparisons put on him.

“Travis is a different athlete, as everybody knows,” Melton said. “He’s a Heisman Trophy winner, won a lot of awards. I’m not going to compare myself to somebody that’s done that, but what I will say is I like to run for days.”

The Packers, at this point, are likely just hoping Bo Melton becomes the absolute best version of Bo Melton that he can be.
