Packers plan to use rookie in ‘a zillion different ways’

The Green Bay Packers made headlines by picking a wide receiver in the first round for the first time in more than two decades.

Matthew Golden, that selection, is a traditional, potential star wideout.

But then in the third round, the Packers picked do-everything WR Savion Williams out of TCU. And Green Bay is very excited about him, too.

Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich spoke with reporters recently and shared exciting thoughts on Williams.

“He’s a guy that is really interesting,” Stenavich said. “You can come up with a zillion different ways to use him in your offense. That’s one guy I’m really fired up about. The good thing now is like we have a good core of older wideouts and then we’ve got these two young guys coming in that are really special. It’s not as if they have to start and be the guy at a certain position. We can put them in different places, see where they excel, and move them along from there. But I’m excited about a lot of the different things we can do with Savion, whether it’s handing him the ball or his routes down the field. He’s a guy that can make some plays.”

In 2024 for TCU, Williams had 60 catches for 611 yards to go with 51 rushes for 322 yards. He had six touchdowns through the air and six touchdowns on the ground.

Williams even threw three passes, and he completed all three for 22 yards and one score.

Given how crowded Green Bay’s wide receiver room is right now, Williams will likely get integrated slowly. But his ability to excel on gadget plays and in special situations should allow Stenavich to create some fun packages to use the rookie’s talents.

Golden and Williams should be lots of fun to watch with the Packers for years to come.
