The Green Bay Packers have spent this offseason navigating potential changes — most of which appear to be centered on the defensive side of the ball. Whether it’s trades, cuts, or contract restructuring, the team seems focused on reshaping that unit. While the Packers still boast one of the most talented offenses in the league, the decision to release cornerback Jaire Alexander felt like a major loss — even if he wasn’t always healthy.
Heading into the season, the outlook remains uncertain. It could be a strong campaign that sees Green Bay take the NFC North, or a disappointing one if depth and durability issues arise.
“It was one thing for Jordan Love to battle multiple injuries in 2024; it was another for the quarterback to lose practically his entire receiving corps to various ailments by year’s end,” wrote CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin.“The Packers did their best to bolster their depth this offseason, spending not one but two early draft picks on receiver help, but at the end of the day, Matt LaFleur needs his arsenal to stay on the field to ensure his steady rate of postseason bids continues.”
While head coach Matt LaFleur appears to have solid job security for now, USA Today’s Jacob Camenker believes that missing the playoffs again could force a tough decision from newly appointed team president Ed Policy.
“LaFleur is in a similar position to McDermott. He has thrived during the regular season, posting a 67-33 record, but hasn’t yet been able to get his team over the postseason hump, where he is just 3-5. If the Packers can’t do better than the NFC’s No. 7 seed, which they have earned in back-to-back seasons, new Green Bay president Ed Policy will have a tough decision to make about the team’s future leader,” Camenker wrote.
Green Bay should be a playoff team in 2025, but if they fall short once again, it could spell the end of LaFleur’s tenure — a move that would no doubt upset some fans in Green Bay.
