Packers’ Jordan Love could win MVP as dark horse candidate if he recaptures 2023 form

The Green Bay Packers are exploring a potential blockbuster deal involving Steelers star T.J. Watt. The team is reportedly very interested in bringing the Wisconsin native back home. A reunion appears to be realistic, especially now that the Packers have cap space after releasing cornerback Jaire Alexander.

“I’m gonna make TJ Watt happy, the player, hey, come home to Wisconsin,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on Wednesday’s Get Up. “Play for the hometown, home area Packers. The Green Bay Packers are actually low key looking at the pass rush market around free agency, potential trades, potential signings. They have some new cap space after they moved on from Jaire Alexander, the star cornerback. Why not use that money and make TJ Watt the highest paid edge rusher?”

While the Watt situation is promising, the success of the Packers’ 2025 season could ultimately hinge on quarterback Jordan Love and his performance.

“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote.

According to Packers Wire’s Zach Kruse, Love could even be a dark-horse MVP contender this season.

“A quarterback has won this award every year since 2012 and 17 of the last 18 years overall, so Love — the most important Packer entering 2025 — is the obvious choice here. He’ll enter the season as a big MVP longshot after an injury-plagued 2024 season, but if the version of Love that ended the 2023 season shows up for a long stretch of 2025, he’ll be right in the mix,” Kruse wrote.

Love has the talent to compete with the best. While he’s not a favorite for MVP, his underdog status could work in his favor if he delivers a strong season.
