The Green Bay Packers are approaching the point in the preseason where it’s nearly time to make some roster cuts. While a few position battles are clearly defined, others are expected to go right down to the wire. Regardless of how the roster shakes out, the team’s overall success ultimately falls on the shoulders of Jordan Love.
“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” SI’s Albert Breer wrote.
Love is currently managing an injury, but he’s expected to return to practice this week. Despite that, he’s already drawing criticism for his durability.
“I love me some Jordan Love, I do, but somebody’s got to say it. He is injury prone. Jordan Love is an injury prone quarterback,” ESPN’s Kyle Wallace said. “He’s been injured two out of the three seasons that he’s been here in Green Bay. It is a concerning trend that I have.”
Meanwhile, the running back battle for the final roster spot is heating up. Packers insider Matt Schneidman believes one player’s flaw may be the deciding factor.
“If the Packers only take three RBs, which I expect, plays like that are why Brooks might make it over Wilson. Poor pass pro rep from Wilson leads to a sack. Jacobs and Lloyd are locks. If you need a pass-protecting RB3, Brooks is your guy,” Schneidman wrote.

The smallest details can determine whether a player makes the roster, and poor pass protection — especially as the last line of defense for the quarterback — is critical. The Packers have one final preseason game to make a decision, but unless something changes, it appears Wilson could end up on the short end of the stick.
