Packers’ decision to cut Jaire Alexander opens door to striking a deal with Steelers’ TJ Watt

The Green Bay Packers seem to be quietly waiting to make a move that could shake up their roster in a very positive way. The offense looks solid, and Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes the key will be Jordan Love.

“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” Breer wrote.

Meanwhile, the Packers could be closely monitoring a situation in Pittsburgh. Milwaukee native TJ Watt is reportedly unhappy with his contract situation with the Steelers.

“Everybody just has assumed that, rightfully, the two sides will figure it out,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said. “But I don’t think they’re very close right now, and I don’t think he’s particularly pleased.”

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggested that a homecoming in Green Bay might be on the table for Watt.

“I’m gonna make TJ Watt happy, the player, hey, come home to Wisconsin,” Fowler said on Wednesday’s Get Up. “Play for the hometown, home area Packers. The Green Bay Packers are actually low key looking at the pass rush market around free agency, potential trades, potential signings. They have some new cap space after they moved on from Jaire Alexander, the star cornerback. Why not use that money and make TJ Watt the highest paid edge rusher?”

The Packers would be willing to trade for Watt and could easily meet his contract demands. If Green Bay lands Watt, it could instantly make them a Super Bowl favorite.
