The Yankees saw third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera leave Monday night’s game against the Mariners in an ambulance after suffering a gruesome lower-leg injury while sliding into home plate.
Cabrera appeared to injure his ankle while trying to turn an Aaron Judge flyout into a sacrifice fly. He nearly overran home plate while trying to avoid the tag and had to pull up to touch the plate, but his lower-leg got caught underneath him as he tried to reach back and score.
While Cabrera did score, he immediately started writhing in pain and was on the field for several minutes before medical staff strapped him to a stretcher and loaded him into an ambulance.

Cabrera’s foot appeared to be pointing in an unnatural direction after the injury. His ankle was placed into a brace before he was loaded into the ambulance, manager Aaron Boone said after the game.
The Yankees did not provide an update on Cabrera’s exact injury but said he was in good hands while staying overnight at a local hospital.

“I think everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation,” Boone told reporters. “So, just praying for our guy tonight and hoping for the best.”
Judge told reporters that Cabrera made sure to ask whether he scored as he was being tended to by the Yankees’ medical staff.
On Tuesday, New York officially put Cabrera on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle fracture, and the team activated D.J. LeMahieu off the IL to replace him.

Cabrera has started at third base in 30 of the Yankees’ 41 games this season, but finding production from the position has been a challenge. The 26-year-old is batting .243 with one home run and a .631 OPS, coming in with an 82 OPS+ that sits 18 points below the league average.
A beloved figure in the clubhouse, Cabrera’s injury cast a dark cloud over an otherwise impressive 11-run night for the Yankees.
