Orioles predicted to replace Brandon Hyde with former Mets manager linked to Astros scandal

The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the least exciting teams as the season has progressed. Manager Brandon Hyde was expected to lead them to a playoff berth, but after a disastrous start, the Orioles decided to part ways with him. The decision came in May — a notably early dismissal, unless the team is severely underperforming, which was clearly the case.

“The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday, hoping a new leader can spark a turnaround of the most disappointing team in Major League Baseball. Hyde, who had managed the Orioles through the end of their rebuild and helped lead them to the past two postseasons, oversaw an underwhelming start. The Orioles fell to 15-29,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.

Not only did the Orioles start off slowly, they were also considered one of the most disappointing teams in the league at the time.

“There is no bigger disappointment through this season’s first half than the Orioles, and it probably isn’t even close,” ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez wrote.

A potential candidate to help turn things around is Carlos Beltran, who previously accepted a managerial position with the Mets but stepped down before managing a single game.

“This would be a major splash. Beltran was hired by the New York Mets to be their manager ahead of the 2020 season. But after the Houston Astros cheating scandal broke and he was explicitly named for his role in everything, he decided to step down. General manager Mike Elias and Beltran have some level of familiarity with each other since Beltran was with the Astros in 2017 when Elias was the assistant general manager during that time. That connection could prompt Elias to give Beltran his first managerial job if he’s the one still making decisions when that time comes,” SI’s Brad Wakai wrote.

Bringing in Beltran would be an interesting move, especially since he has no actual managerial experience. Given the youth of the roster, this choice might not be ideal. Still, Beltran remains an intriguing candidate to keep an eye on.
