All eyes were on Cameron Ward this preseason as the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft took the field for the Titans. Although Ward only played eight series, his performance provided plenty for people to discuss. His final stat line was 10/19 for 143 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. These numbers sparked reactions from both analysts and casual stat-watchers. One notable voice, CBS Sports analyst Charles Davis, who also is a color analyst for Titans preseason games, had a front-row seat to all three contests and shared his thoughts.
“He never turned the ball over in preseason. Small sample, but an important one. Low turnover rate is exactly what the team needs from him.”
If you watched the Titans last season, turnovers hurt them at crucial times. Their quarterback, Will Levis, threw an inexplicable interception while attempting to throw the ball out of bounds against the Chicago Bears, which helped Chicago come back to win. He also made an ill-advised lateral to Tony Pollard against the Jets, resulting in another costly turnover that lost Tennessee points when they were in field-goal range. Instead of possible wins, these games ended in losses. There were several other instances in the 2024 season when crucial turnovers from the quarterback cost Tennessee despite being in contention to win.
Ward, although he describes himself as a gunslinger, has not been known to be a turnover machine at any level he has played at. Throughout the preseason, that remained true for Ward, providing a much-needed change for a Titans team that struggled with turnovers at the position in 2024. Nevertheless, the regular season will present new challenges. Ward will face more exotic pressure than he did in the preseason, forcing him to make faster decisions and process the field quickly. Whether he’s able to do so remains to be seen. As for Charles Davis, he likes what he has seen so far from Ward. And it is obvious the coaches for Tennessee like what they see from him as well.
Now, with the preseason behind him, the bright lights are on. Cameron Ward’s next stop: Week 1 versus one of the best defenses in the 2024 season, the Denver Broncos.
