Oliver Marmol’s Cardinals set to do something not done since late 1990s

The St. Louis Cardinals lost again on Wednesday afternoon. On another 90-degree day at Busch Stadium, in front of a nearly empty stadium, Oliver Marmol’s squad dropped their 79th game of the 2025 season.

Unless the Cardinals finish their final nine games with a 7-2 record or better, Marmol will lead his team to their second losing season in three years. The organization has not had two losing seasons in three years since 1997 and 1999, when the team won 73 and 75 games, respectively.

The Cardinals are going to miss the postseason for the third straight season. St. Louis made the postseason in 2022 with 93 wins, but finished last in 2023 at 71-91 and then came back and won 83 last season, but failed to reach the postseason.

On Wednesday, Alec Burleson hit his 18th home run of the season, but the Cardinals mustered just a total of four hits in the game. Andre Pallante took his 15th loss of the season, allowing six hits and four runs over five innings for St. Louis.

Spencer Steer had a big game for the Reds. His three-run homer in the fourth inning gave them the lead, and then he drove in two more with a single in the seventh inning.

It was a must-win for Cincinnati, as they battled back to 76-76. The Reds, before the Mets and Diamondbacks take the field, are now 2.5 back of New York and 1 behind Arizona. New York hosts the Padres on Wednesday night, and the Diamondbacks are at home against the San Francisco Giants.
