Oilers lose 373-goal forward to Western Conference rival

The Edmonton Oilers couldn’t get Jeff Skinner back.

The veteran forward, with 373 career NHL goals, signed with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent on Friday.

Skinner is coming off a 16-goal, 13-assist season as a depth winger for the Oilers.

Before Edmonton, he had spent six years in Buffalo. Skinner began his career with eight seasons in Carolina.

His 373 career goals are coupled with 326 career assists.

Skinner’s next point will be the 700th of his NHL career.

At 33 years old, Skinner has a cool opportunity in San Jose. The Sharks are working to build up their next generation of young talent. Skinner can serve as a mentor.

He was once the No. 7 overall pick, back in 2010, so he knows how big expectations for young players can work. He can pass on a lot of lessons learned along the way.

It’s a tough break for the Oilers, but the Sharks must be thrilled.
