Oilers cap situation makes Corey Perry extension difficult

The Edmonton Oilers are hoping to keep one of its key players this offseason, but there is one thing that could prevent it from happening.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) Senior NHL Columnist Pierre LeBrun said that while Perry wants to re-sign with Edmonton, the Oilers’ cap situation may get in the way of an extension.

“Corey Perry still hopes to re-sign in Edmonton but the pathway to common ground on a deal has been difficult with the Oilers’ cap situation. Very possible Perry ends up on the free-agent market Tuesday. But the door remains open with Edmonton,” Lebrun posted.

Perry has helped Edmonton get to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers, albeit the Oilers lost in both years. Perry posted 30 points in the 2024-2025 regular season, but turned it up a notch in the playoffs as he scored 14 points off 10 goals and four assists in 22 games during the Oilers’ run to the finals.

If Perry is unable to come to an agreement with the Oilers, he may end up getting picked up by another team on the free agent market, which opens July 1.The hope for both Edmonton and Perry seems to be that he stay for his third season with the Oilers, but the financial situation for Edmonton could end that hope.

Perry has played in the Stanley Cup Final for five different teams: the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning and Edmonton Oilers. Perry’s lone championship came with the Ducks in 2007, but has since lost five consecutive finals.
