The Denver Nuggets haven’t hit on all of their recent picks, but their rivals might soon benefit.
Over the past few years, there hasn’t been much drama in Denver compared to the rest of the league. While there have been some occasional flare-ups, it has mostly been business as usual for the Nuggets as one of the league’s top contenders.
However, one player has stood out as a bit of an outlier in that time. After taking Bones Hyland with the 26th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, he quickly broke out as a fun rookie guard as Jamal Murray missed the entire 2021-22 season.
After Hyland’s fun first year, he saw a similar role in year two, but he had some issues behind the scenes that eventually led to his inclusion in a midseason trade to the LA Clippers. Since that deal, Hyland hasn’t found his footing in the league, bouncing from the Clippers to a two-way deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season.
While Hyland hasn’t found the perfect fit, he might at least have a home to begin next season. In a recent article from The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski, he reported that Hyland is in the lead for a spot on next year’s roster.
“The Wolves have looked into several candidates for the spot, including Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne and Landry Shamet, league sources told The Athletic,” Krawczynski wrote. “However, all indications are that Bones Hyland is the front-runner to get that final spot, league sources said. Hyland signed a two-way contract with the Wolves in February, played briefly in Iowa and spent the rest of his time with the Timberwolves.”
Although it’s been a rocky road for Hyland, Tim Connelly, who drafted him in Denver, seems ready to take another chance on the young guard in Minnesota.
