Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic impressively breaks own record, but not in the NBA

It isn’t a stretch to suggest Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic is the best player in the NBA.

The three-time MVP is an unbelievably accurate passer, a methodical ball handler, a pick-and-pop extraordinaire, and a low-post bruiser, enabling him to have his way on the offensive end.

Although chaotic is the perfect term to describe the Nuggets’ 2024-25 campaign (mixed reviews on Russell Westbrook’s play and Mike Malone’s late–season firing), Jokic managed to guide the franchise to the postseason as the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference.

The 30-year-old center averaged 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists per game with the 50-32 Nuggets, shooting 57.6% from the field and 41.7% from downtown.

Impressively, Jokic broke his own unique record this past Saturday, but it didn’t take place in the NBA.

“Since Serbia began playing the FIBA EuroBasket as an independent nation in 2007, there have been only four 30+ point games by their players,” FIBA EuroBasket wrote.

“Nikola Jokic is now responsible for 50% of those. With 39 points against Latvia, Jokic set his new national team career-high across all competitions, but also lifted the bar for all other Serbian players when it comes to FIBA EuroBasket records.”

Jokic notched 32 points against Italy in 2022, tying Milos Teodosic for the most points scored by a Serbian contributor in the EuroBasket.

Considering Jokic continues to improve, it was only a matter of time before he surpassed the 32-point mark.

Thanks to Jokic’s masterful contributions, Serbia has secured four consecutive wins in EuroBasket competition and will attempt to pick up its fifth victory against Turkey on Wednesday.
