Nick Gonzales injury: Pirates infielder exits early after Opening Day home run trot

The first home run of the season is typically a joyous occasion, but it wasn’t completely the case for the Pirates.

On Thursday, second baseman Nick Gonzales provided the honor for Pittsburgh, hitting the team’s first homer of the season to put Pittsburgh up 4-1 against the Marlins. However, in the middle of his home run trot, Gonzales appeared to injure himself as he was forced to limp around the bases.

Gonzales didn’t come out on defense in the bottom of the inning, as Adam Frazier replaced him at second base.

On Friday, the Pirates announced that Gonzales suffered a “non-displaced fracture of the left ankle,” which landed the infielder on the 10-day injured list. His timetable to return is still unclear.

Gonzales appeared in 94 games for Pittsburgh last year, totaling seven home runs and 49 RBIs with a .270 batting average in 2024.

Kendrys Morales home run injury

The most famous home run injury came 15 years ago when Angels first baseman Kendrys Morales suffered a broken leg after a walk-off grand slam against the Mariners on May 29, 2010. He sustained the injury after jumping into a mob while celebrating at home plate.

Morales would go on to miss the rest of the 2010 season along with the entire 2011 campaign before returning to play 134 for the Angels in 2012.
