NFL writer proposes Packers-Steelers trade involving former Aaron Rodgers teammate

It’s officially training camp season in the NFL, which means we’re just around the corner from real football games being played.

Teams are soon going to have to make some tough roster decisions and will have to get rid of some players they’d like to keep. One team that could be facing a roster crunch at the wide receiver spot is the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers selected receiver Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. It’s rare for the Packers to select a receiver at the top of the draft, so it can likely be assumed that Golden will play a large role immediately.

Along with Golden, the team rosters Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Savion Williams (another 2025 draft pick), Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and Mecole Hardman, among others.

As a result, Brandon Austin of Pro Football Network suggested a trade that would send Doubs to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Austin’s proposal looks like this:

  • Steelers receive: WR Romeo Doubs
  • Packers receive: 2026 3rd-round pick

Regarding that potential deal, Austin offered the following analysis:

Doubs’ 600-plus receiving yards in each of the last two seasons outpace current Pittsburgh Steelers No. 2 options like Robert Woods and Calvin Austin III. The Steelers, following the trade of George Pickens, have a glaring need for another wide receiver opposite DK Metcalf.

With Doubs’ production, youth, and manageable $3.5 million cap hit, he could be a logical target given Pittsburgh’s $32.2 million in cap space. His familiarity with Aaron Rodgers could provide added chemistry for a revamped offense.

Given Doubs’ expiring contract and recent concussion issues, a third-round pick feels like solid compensation for both teams.

As Austin pointed out, Doubs would be an improvement over the Steelers’ current options behind DK Metcalf.

The team shipped George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, so they are set to rely on Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III and unproven second-year slot receiver Roman Wilson for significant roles.

Doubs also makes sense in Pittsburgh thanks to his familiarity with Aaron Rodgers. The duo played together in 2022 and Doubs caught 42 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns in that season.

“Aaron Rodgers was very fond of Romeo Doubs when they were together,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer noted back in May.

The Packers would likely jump at the opportunity to get a mid-round selection for a player who may be relegated to a smaller role in 2025 anyway. Also, Doubs is set to be a free agent next offseason, so getting something for him now may be the smart move.

Last season, Doubs caught 46 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns. The wide receiver also surpassed 600 yards in 2023, showing he’s consistent enough to be a fine WR2 or WR3.
