The Denver Broncos came out of the 2024 season thrilled with their performance. After missing the playoffs eight seasons in a row and having to get out from under one of the most disastrous contracts in league history, the Broncos made the playoffs with a rookie quarterback.
As discussed previously, those facts alone make the season a huge success. But as their lopsided loss to the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs showed, the team needs to get Bo Nix some more weapons on offense. Tight end is the team’s most glaring need.
Many would argue that the team should prioritize the running back position or add another capable wide receiver to go with Courtland Sutton, but finding a game-changing kind of tight end might be the move to make. Kevin Patra of NFL.com seems to agree.
While talking about the top priority for each AFC team this offseason, Patra had this to say in regards to Denver:
“Denver tight ends compiled 483 total receiving yards in 2024. Total. Combined. Brock Bowers beat that in a six-game span from Weeks 11-16 (487 yards). Adam Trautman led Broncos TEs with 188 yards. Lucas Krull had the most catches with 19. And Nate Adkins led in TDs with three. It was brutal, folks.
While fellow rookie Jayden Daniels was peppering security blanket Zach Ertz on easy passes, Bo Nix was making low-percentage tosses. Most of the top offenses got TE production last season — Bowers, Trey McBride , George Kittle , Jonnu Smith, Travis Kelce, etc. Not Sean Payton’s in 2024.
Nix needs his own TE mismatch to exploit in 2025. Adding a big-bodied player who can win over the middle and force defenses to match up differently would make it easier on the young quarterback and help open some of those deep shots he wants to take. Penn State’s Tyler Warren and Michigan’s Colston Loveland highlight what is projected as a deep TE class in the 2025 NFL Draft.”
Some feel that this isn’t the deepest draft class for skill players, but that is not the case at tight end, where a few difference-makers could be found. The Broncos need to find one.
