NFL Season Nears: 60 Days From Kickoff and a Look Back at 1965

Are you ready for some football? Well, you’ll have to wait just a little longer, but not too much. The NFL season is quickly approaching. Training camps open later this month, and the Hall of Fame Game wraps up July.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero got fans buzzing Sunday morning by sharing a graphic highlighting the Week 1 matchups along with a caption that read:

“60 days to kickoff.”

So, what’s the significance of 60? While there hasn’t yet been a Super Bowl 60, and there wasn’t one 60 years ago, the number still ties back to a major moment in football history: the 1965 NFL Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns.

That game, played exactly 60 years ago, brought two notable milestones:

  1. It was the first NFL Championship played in January.

  2. It was also the first to be broadcast in color.

Green Bay won 23-12, capturing their sixth NFL title.

The Legend

Vince Lombardi led the Packers as head coach during that win. Green Bay dominated time of possession, rushing 47 times for 204 yards. The defense was stifling, limiting Cleveland to only 38 total plays all game.

The Game

Both teams scored a touchdown and two field goals in the first half. The touchdowns came on their opening drives, with Green Bay holding a 7-6 lead after Cleveland missed an extra point.

Each team’s second field goal followed an interception, the only turnovers until Frank Ryan threw another pick on the Browns’ final possession.

The Packers added to their 13-12 halftime lead with a 90-yard touchdown drive capped by a Paul Hornung run, followed by a fourth-quarter field goal from Don Chandler. That made the final score 23-12.

Cleveland’s best second-half scoring chance came on a deep pass to Jim Brown in the end zone, one of three such attempts by Ryan in the game, followed by a missed field goal.

The Reward

Each Packers player earned $7,500, while Browns players took home $4,600 despite the loss. A crowd of 79,544 fans was in attendance.
