Super Bowl LIX Recap
Super Bowl LIX took place in February and featured Nick Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles against Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs entered the game at 15-2 as the top seed in the AFC. Philadelphia won the NFC with a 14-3 record. This matchup felt like the two best teams in the league, without question.
Philadelphia took control from start to finish and erased any hopes of a Chiefs three-peat. Jalen Hurts opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Jake Elliott added a field goal with 8:38 left in the second quarter to make it 10-0. What came next changed the game completely. Kansas City was hoping to cut into the lead, but rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean from Iowa had other plans. He picked off a Patrick Mahomes pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. That made it 17-0, and the crowd of 65,719 in New Orleans was stunned by the early blowout.
The Chiefs didn’t get on the scoreboard until just 34 seconds remained in the third quarter, by which time the game was already 34-0. Xavier Worthy finished with two touchdown catches, both coming in the second half, and DeAndre Hopkins added one as well. The Eagles won 40-22, earning Sirianni his first Super Bowl title as a head coach.
Philadelphia dominated in first downs, 21 to 12. The total yardage was relatively close at 345 to 275, but that didn’t reflect the Eagles’ control of the game. Kansas City turned the ball over three times.
Jalen Hurts set a Super Bowl record for most rushing yards by a quarterback, finishing with 72. Saquon Barkley didn’t find the end zone but added 57 rushing yards to cap off a historic season.
Both the Eagles and Chiefs will be featured in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season. Philadelphia hosts the Dallas Cowboys in the Thursday night opener on September 4. Kansas City heads to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday, September 5.
