New York Jets fans aren’t going to like the latest team roster rankings from Pro Football Focus.
PFF recently ranked every team’s roster from No. 1 to No. 32, and the Jets, despite their efforts to upgrade several key positions this offseason, nearly ranked dead last.
They checked in at No. 28.
Quarterback Justin Fields was dubbed the team’s X-factor, for obvious reasons. If he turns out to be a successful reclamation project, there’s no telling how many games Gang Green could win. The defense remains playoff-caliber, and if the offense can be at least competent, the Jets will be much better than the 28th-best squad in the NFL.
“New York finally moved on from the failed Aaron Rodgers experiment and replaced him with Justin Fields on a two-year, $40 million contract,” PFF wrote. “Fields has never been a top-20 quarterback in PFF overall grade in any of his four seasons, but he’s still only 26 years old and will be reuniting with Garrett Wilson, whom he threw passes to at Ohio State. With an underwhelming receiving corps outside of Wilson, the Jets would be wise to tap into Fields’ rushing ability as much as possible.”

Fields will be a lightning rod for conversation during training camp and the preseason, in part because if he fails, the Jets don’t have a Plan B. While Tyrod Taylor has plenty of experience to serve as an injury stop-gap starter, he’s not the kind of quarterback who a team can rely on for full season of quality starts.
It’s Fields or bust, which, at this point in the former first-rounder’s career, is a risky proposition.
The only teams that ranked worse than the New York Jets were the Carolina Panthers (No. 29), New Orleans Saints (No. 30), Tennessee Titans (No. 31), and Cleveland Browns (No. 32).
