NFL analyst tabs Cowboys as best fit for projected $20 million Broncos back

The Dallas Cowboys rushing attack was one of the worst in the league last season. They could look for a new starting running back in free agency.

Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams is a free agent and could benefit from a change of scenery. USA Today’s Tyler Dragon noted that Williams could be a great fit for the Cowboys who could be losing Rico Dowdle in free agency.

“A change of scenery appears to be what’s best for him. Williams will be 25 years old at the start of next season so he’s among the youngest free-agent backs,” wrote Dragon. “Cowboys starting running back Rico Dowdle is a free agent. The Cowboys might select a running back in the 2025 NFL draft as they attempt to upgrade the position, but Williams would give Dallas some reliable insurance in the backfield.”

Spotrac projects Williams to earn a three-year, $20 million deal on the open market. He never broke out to be a star with the Broncos, but he would not be expected to be the focal point of the offense with the Cowboys. The Broncos have had inconsistency at quarterback, making the run game a focal point for defenses. In four seasons with the team, Williams had 2,394 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Cowboys had the sixth-fewest rushing yards in the league and were tied for the least runs of over 20 yards. Adding Williams could yield great results if he can be a compliment to the Cowboys’ potent passing attack.
