Lionel Messi’s consistent contributions on the pitch have recently helped Inter Miami break their winless streak. The Herons are currently third in the Major League Soccer table with 29 points in 16 matches.
Inter Miami are now headed to play in the Club World Cup next week. Amid the wins and excitement, worries and uncertainties about Messi’s future at the MLS club prevail.
The 37-year-old’s current contract with Inter Miami is set to expire at the end of this season, and while, club authorities have assured that a deal will be signed soon, no official announcement has been made as of yet.
On top of that, Messi’s doubtful response when asked about his stay at Inter Miami after an MLS match on May 18 and several reports linking him to other clubs, have added to the list of uncertainties.
Now, one of his boyhood clubs, Newell’s Old Boys’ president Ignacio Astore has revealed that Messi ‘wants to come’ back to Rosario.
What did Newell’s Old Boys’ president say about Lionel Messi’s potential return?
Before joining Barcelona’s academy, Messi was a part of Newell’s Old Boys from 1995 to 2000. While speaking to TyC Sports, Astore mentioned that while he has not spoken to the star forward, he is aware of the Argentine icon’s ‘appreciation’ and desire to return to the club.

“It’s something he has to decide. I haven’t spoken to the player. I don’t think it’s appropriate to speak to him because it would put him in an awkward position. Maybe he has a contract, maybe he feels it’s not the right time, maybe he has other family commitments… I know the appreciation he has for the institution and how much he wants to come,” he said.
In another interview with Radio Con Vos, Astore also disclosed (comments via GOAL) that Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia is also rooting for Messi to return to his nation’s football.
“He’s constantly working on this. Messi is missing a Copa Argentina, a Copa Sudamericana, and a Libertadores, because he has all the other titles. It’s his decision,” said Astore.
Messi and Inter Miami will be currently focused on facing Egyptian side Al Ahly in their first match of the Club World Cup on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida. It remains to be what lies next in the Barcelona legend’s future.
