Newcastle vs. Man United lineups, predicted starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Under-fire Onana to start

Newcastle United welcome Manchester United to St James’ Park as the Carabao Cup winners seek to cap a memorable season with a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Eddie Howe’s side claimed a commanding 2-0 victory in December’s reverse fixture. Although United are no longer at quite such a low ebb, the Magpies will fancy their chances of completing a double.

Newcastle headed in the weekend in fifth place, level on points with Chelsea in fourth and holding a game in hand on the teams around them. However, results on Saturday could see them start this one in seventh, depending on how Manchester City and Aston Villa’s get on.

A knife-edge Champions League battle is something United would dearly love to be a part of as they languish in 13th place, with no prospect of finishing the matchweek any higher.

Newcastle vs. Man United lineups, confirmed starting 11, team news

Newcastle’s main fitness issue of sorts heading into the match concerned the health of boss Eddie Howe, who excused himself from training on Thursday and Friday due to feeling unwell.

Of more pressing concern is the fitness of top scorer Alexander Isak who has been substituted in each of Newcastle’s past two-matches due to a groin complaint.

Anthony Gordon could return after missing the past four matches through injury and suspension but Joe Willock remains sidelined.

Newcastle predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Pope (GK) — Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento — Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton — Murphy, Isak, Barnes.

Injured: Hall (foot), Isak (groin, doubt), Gordon (hip/groin, doubt), Willock (concussion) Botman (knee), Lascelles (knee)
Suspended: None

Ruben Amorim is likely to keep faith with Andre Onana, despite the goalkeeper’s errors for both goals during Thursday’s 2-2 draw at Lyon in the Europa League quarterfinals.

Amorim will probably have the same squad at his disposal as the one that travelled to France. Joshua Zirkzee is pushing for a start in place of Rasmus Hojlund after coming off the bench to score in midweek.

Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount each stepped up their returns to fitness with substitute appearances at Lyon and Mount could be in contention for a first start since last December.

Man United predicted lineup (3-4-3): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro — Dalot, Fernandes, Ugarte, Dorgu — Mount, Zirkzee, Garnacho.

Injured: Heaven (leg), de Ligt (knock), Evans (knock), L. Martinez (ACL), Diallo (ankle), Collyer leg
Suspended: None
