Newcastle vs. Man United final score: Premier League result, updates, stats as Barnes brace demolishes sorry Red Devils

Harvey Barnes’ second-half brace fired Newcastle United towards their first league double over Manchester United for 94 years.

An emphatic 4-1 victory at a buoyant St James’ Park puts Eddie Howe’s side in a strong position to secure UEFA Champions League qualification.

Howe was absent from the touchline due to illness but the Newcastle players did their manager proud after Sandro Tonali and United winger Alejandro Garnacho traded superb second-half goals.

Barnes, who scored in the 3-0 win over his former club Leicester City last time out, converted from close range when Jacob Murphy steered Tino Livramento’s cross back across goal shortly after halftime.

The 27-year-old then seized upon a slip from the usually reliable Noussair Mazraoui before driving towards goal and firing into the top corner. That effectively sealed the points before midway in the second half, given Ruben Amorim’s side appeared to have checked out of the contest at that point.

Altay Bayindir started in goal for United as Andre Onana was taken out of the firing line, but the Turkey international was culpable for Newcastle’s fourth, chipping a clearance to Joelinton, who nodded down for captain Bruno Guimaraes to finish.

If Newcastle beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday, they will move up to third with six games of the season remaining. A day later, Manchester United face Lyon with their Europa League quarterfinal all-square at 2-2. It represents their remaining chance to salvage anything from an utterly dismal campaign.

Newcastle vs. Man United live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

A comprehensive victory for Newcastle over a familiarly bereft Manchester United. Harvey Barnes scored twice and the hosts were brilliant after the break. Too big, too strong and too hungry for Ruben Amorim’s meek troops. Newcastle will go third if they beat Crystal Palace and look worthy of a Champions League place. United must beat Lyon to keep their season alive in the Europa League. In reality, they just need 2024/25 to end as quickly as possible. Thanks for joining us.

90 mins: For no good earthly reason, we shall have five minutes of stoppage time.

85 mins: Guimaraes and Joelinton depart to standing ovations. Stick a fork in this one. Longstaff and Miley get a brief run out.

83 mins: A Manchester United attack! Remember those? Dorgu crosses towards the back post, where Livramento ties up before Mount plonks a long-range effort straight into Pope’s gloves.

82 mins: United also looking towards midweek as Mainoo replaces Fernandes.

78 mins: Treble change for Newcastle, with Krafth, Wilson and Gordon on for Trippier, Isak and Murphy. Jason Tindall shifting the focus to the midweek game against Crystal Palace. Victory there will lift the Toon up to third.

77 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Bruno Guimaraes!!!!!!

Penny for Andre Onana’s thoughts…. Bayindir botches a chipped clearance that Joelinton nods to Guimaraes and the Newcastle skipper makes no mistake. That might complete United’s misery but they’ve totally checked out here, so who knows?

71 mins: Another deep corner that Burn nods back across goal. Barnes gets there ahead of Bayindir but can’t divert goalwards. United look like a team going through the motions at the moment.

64 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Harvey Barnes!!!!!

Breathing space for Newcastle now as Mazraoui loses his footing under pressure from Barnes and is ransacked. The winger then drives towards goal and spears a finish beyond Bayindir and into the top corner.

62 mins: Murphy hangs up a cross and Carabao Cup final hero Burn has stayed forward but heads over.

55 mins: Along with Zirkzee making way for Hojlund, Dorgu replaces Amass, who has performed tidily on his full Premier League debut. Mount is also on for the goalscorer Garnacho.

53 mins; Oh dear, Zirkzee embarks on a nice, mazy dribble across the Newcastle half but pulls up sharply. It looks like his hamstring has gone and Rasmus Hojlund is swiftly ready to come on.

49 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Harvey Barnes!!!!!

Newcastle regain the lead and Barnes is on target again having scored in their win over his old club Leicester. Livramento was the architect as he went on a penetrating dribble. However, his cross was overhit and it looked like the chance might be gone but Murphy was alert to steer it back across goal for Barnes to finish gleefully.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We’re back underway. No changes for either side yet but there’s activity on the United bench that suggests Harry Maguire will be with us shortly.

Halftime

All square at the break. Two wonderfully worked goals from Tonali and Garnacho. Newcastle will feel they should be ahead on the balance of play.

45 mins: Garnacho barreling down the left and into the box with Zirkzee for company. He gets off a snap shot that’s a nice height for Pope. There will be two minutes of stoppage time.

43 mins: On we go and another United teenager, Yoro enters the book. Finally the cross comes in deep and Guimaraes steers his header over from a very narrow angle.

42 mins: A Newcastle corner is delayed by some nonsense between Amass and Schar, who you feel is trying to old-man the youngster.

40 mins: Isak lines up a volley from Trippier’s corner that Mazraoui blocks. He retrieves the loose ball and United clear his cross at the second attempt.

37 minsGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Alejandro Garnacho!!!!

Well, very much against the run of play, United are level. Dalot drives forward, in-field from right wing-back. He feeds Garnacho, who stuns a lovely controlled finish across Pope and into the bottom corner.

35 mins: Searching cross from Harvey Barnes and Burn heads onto the roof of the net.

34 minFine stop from Bayindir to deny Isak at close quarters! United getting fairly ominously over-run at the moment. Here come Newcastle again and Lindelof scrambles behind.

28 mins: United under the cosh a bit here as Fernandes is hurried into clearing behind for a corner. It’s taken short and worked out to Tonali, who is given a scandalous amount of room to shoot just wide from 25 yards as United play statues.

24 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Sandro Tonali!!!!!

I told you they were getting closer. It’s a fabulously worked goal. Trippier drills a pass into Isak, who flicks the ball up with his first touch and lifts a pass over the United defence. Tonali charges onto it to volley home. Wonderful stuff.

22 mins: Newcastle getting closer. Guimares curls in a cross from deep on the right and Isak gets up to send a header bouncing narrowly wide of the far post.

17 mins: Trippier curls a free-kick towards the back post that’s a good couple of feet over the tallest outfield player in the league. That’s a load of old rubbish, I’m afraid.

15 mins: Burn punts a hopeful ball towards Isak, who controls it on the left-hand side of the United box and produces some lovely footwork to dig out a cross to the back post. There’s no one there. It was the sort of cross Alexander Isak might have enjoyed being on the end of.

12 minsFabulous save from Pope! Eriksen drives a pass into Fernandes and he and Zirkzee exchange one-touch passes before the Dutchman fires goalwards. Newcastle’s keeper pushes it over the bar and deals with the resulting corner with the minimum of fuss.

11 mins: Trippier lofts a setpiece into the United box from deep and that’s a moment to give confidence to Bayindir, who claims it well up above Yoro.

8 mins: Half a penalty claim for United as Zirkzee boots Dalot’s cross against Murphy’s elbow. It’s quickly checked and cleared by the VAR.

4 mins: Zirkzee drills a pass through Fernandes and Newcastle pounce. Murphy fizzes a low shot just wide of the left-hand post. I’m not sure Bayindir was getting there had that been on target.

2 mins: Burn welcomes Garnacho with a long-limbed sliding tackle. The United winger has his right hand strapped and landed awkwardly on it. He’s fine to continue, mind.

Kickoff: 1st Half

We’re underway at St James Park

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams, out into the Gallogate roar. We’re almost ready to go

20 mins before kickoff: Chelsea managed to mitigate the damage against Ipswich, as substitute Jadon Sancho fired a superb equaliser. Still. that 2-2 draw means Newcastle know they will leap up to fourth if they can beat Manchester United today. There are many twists and turns to come in the race for Champions League places but it’s safe to say no one will hFaave realistically factored Chelsea dropping points today into their calculations.

40 mins before kickoff: There’s obviously far more headline-grabbing pieces of team news for Manchester United but it feels like a big day for Joshua Zirkzee, who scored in Lyon in midweek and has very much earned his starting place. In the reverse fixture, the Dutchman was substituted before halftime as Newcastle ran amok. He’s since put 2together a very nice recovery in form and reputation.

1 hour before kickoff: Newcastle are unchanged from the side that swatted aside Leicester in their previous match. That means top scorer Alexander Isak is fit to start. Anthony Gordon is back in the matchday squad for the first time since March 2 after injury and suspension lay-offs.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: Here’s the Manchester United team and confirmation that Andre Onana has been stood down from action. Altay Bayindir comes in for his Premier League debut, while there’s also a first start in the competition for Harry Amass at left wing-back. Those are two of five changes made by Ruben Amorim.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: This is one of four Premier League games today and, in one of the earlier kickoffs, events are unfolding that could be of huge significance to Newcastle’s top-five bid. Chelsea are at home to relegation-doomed Ipswich and are 2-0 down to Kieran McKenna’s side. If the Tractor Boys hold on, Chelsea will be level on points with Newcastle in sixth having played two games more.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Newcastle vs. Manchester United. The Magpies are seeking to do the double over the Red Devils for the first time since 1930/31. What’s the best part of a century between friends?

Newcastle vs. Man United lineups, team news

Newcastle’s main fitness issue of sorts heading into the match concerned the health of boss Eddie Howe, who excused himself from training on Thursday and Friday due to feeling unwell. Howe was later taken to hospital and his assistant Jason Tindall will oversee touchline duties

Of more pressing concern is the fitness of top scorer Alexander Isak who has been substituted in each of Newcastle’s past two-matches due to a groin complaint. He starts again in an unchanged side from the XI that beat Leicester City last time out.

Anthony Gordon is back in the matchday squad for the first time since March 2 having been sidelined variously by injury and suspension.

Harry Amass makes his full Premier League debut at left wing-back.
