Newcastle vs. Liverpool score: Premier League result, stats as Ngumoha winner caps instant classic

Meet the new Reds, same as the old Reds.

Yet another classic between Newcastle and Liverpool ended in familiar fashion as 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha scored a 100th-minute winner to snatch a 3-2 victory over the 10-man Magpies at St. James’ Park on Monday.

The match presented a roller coaster ride like many others between these two clubs, as Newcastle again fell just short of requirements as the winless run against defending Premier League champions Liverpool reached 18 straight games without victory.

As the clock ticked past 30 minutes, Newcastle could see a delicious tonic within their grasp. With wantaway striker Alexander Isak’s suitors in town, the Magpies dominated the first half-hour against defending champions Liverpool, seeking their first Premier League win over the Reds in 10 years.

It would then turn sour in a heartbeat. A Ryan Gravenberch goal against the run of play and a red card to Anthony Gordon would leave Newcastle reeling at the break, and things only devolved further for the hosts there. Hugo Ekitike’s lightning-quick goal out of halftime put the Magpies two down, and a litany of injuries to key players would leave the Magpies reeling further.

Bruno Guimaraes pulled a goal back just before the hour mark with a smart header, but ultimately the game felt as if it could not be sufficiently rescued. Instead, Newcastle were saddled with a deflating defeat plus fitness concerns to Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, and Fabian Schar plus an impending suspension for Gordon after his dangerous, studs-up tackle on Virgil van Dijk was upgraded to red by a VAR review.

Then suddenly, the hosts found new life out of thin air. Substitute striker William Osula struck in the 88th minute, providing a last-gasp equaliser that left Newcastle with new-found energy. From there, they were on top and seeking an improbable victory, well and truly on top.

But with 11 minutes of stoppage time to navigate, the energy faded once again and Liverpool pushed for a winner of their own, which came via the young debutant in his first Premier League appearance.

Newcastle vs. Liverpool live updates, highlights from Premier League

FULLTIME: Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

WHAT A GAME!!!! An absolutely THRILLER comes to a gripping conclusion as young Rio Ngumoha scores a sensational winning goal at the death.

Newcastle appeared to be well beaten before mounting an improbable comeback, and even looking likely to win the game early in stoppage time. Ultimately, they ran out of steam just a minute too soon, and Liverpool snatched the points.

Both teams can be proud of their performances, but the individual quality of the defending champions ultimately shines in the end. Liverpool will be wary of having coughed up a 2-0 lead twice so far, while Newcastle will be left with nothing to show for their inspired, man-down performance but a litany of injuries to sort through.

90+10 min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL! 16-YEAR-OLD RIO NGUMOHA HAS SURELY WON IT FOR LIVERPOOL! THE YOUNGSTER IS LEFT ALL ALONE AT THE FAR POST WITH JUST SECONDS LEFT IN THE MATCH AND NEWCASTLE ARE UNDONE!!!!!!!

Dominik Szoboszlai receives the ball on the right edge of the penalty area and touches it to the youngster alone on the left edge for the goal gaping.

Watch in UK:

90+6 min: Rio Ngumoha makes his Premier League debut for Liverpool, spelling Cody Gakpo deep into stoppage time. Harvey Elliott also comes on to replace Curtis Jones.

90th min: Newcastle are energised as we head towards added time, and have their sights et on a winner! The hosts are somehow flying to the ball, and have a corner to relish! Elanga takes and it’s cleared for the moment, but St. James’ Park is in FULL VOICE!

As 11 minutes of added time are shown, this game is FAR from over!

88th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! ASTONISHING! WILLIAM OSULA HAS EQUALISED OUT OF NOTHING! ST. JAMES’ PARK IS IN DREAMLAND, AND MAN-DOWN NEWCASTLE ARE LEVEL!

Off the restart from Bradley’s yellow card tackle, the Newcastle substitute beats Ryan Gravenberch to a flick-on at the top of the penalty area and he slides the ball past an onrushing Alisson! The defending champions are STUNNED!!!

Watch in UK:

87th min: Conor Bradley cuts down Bruno Guimaraes to pick up a yellow card after being beaten by a powerful dribble.

77th min: Newcastle have yet another injury worry as Fabian Schar has gone down in the penalty area with a head injury, which Simon Hooper takes ages to recognise and stop the game. Alisson waves out the medical staff quickly, and the concern is now for the Newcastle veteran who remains on his side. The fans booed the referee incessantly for his delay, but then St. James’ Park falls quiet as there is concern for the defender’s well-being.

Eventually, Schar turns over and sits up slowly to expose a nasty head wound, which the staff bandages. He will have to be replaced, as new signing Malik Thiaw prepares to enter.

During the stoppage, Liverpool make a double change as Conor Bradley and Federico Chiesa enter, replacing Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. Dominik Szoboszlai will move into midfield as Bradley takes over at right-back, while Chiesa goes up top.

75th min: There’s anther problem for Newcastle as Joelinton has gone down after a challenge in midfield and cannot continue. Jacob Ramsey will have to come on in his place as the Brazilian is forced off with injury, the second Newcastle midfielder to exit after taking his lumps.

Ramsey makes his Newcastle debut after a summer move from Aston Villa. Also in are Lewis Hall and William Osula, with Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes making way.

64th min: Chance, Newcastle! Alisson has to make a double save to prevent Newcastle scoring straight from a corner! Kieran Trippier’s delivery catches the Liverpool goalkeeper off balance, and he punches the ball up into the air and then again out over the crossbar. What a nervy moment!

Shortly after, Sandro Tonali cannot continue, as he’s withdrawn in favour of Lewis Miley.

57th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! GAME ON?!?!?! BRUNO GUIMARAES HEADS PAST ALISSON!!!

Tino Livramento gets the ball out wide and has space to loop in a delivery, and the Brazilian captain leaped above Milos Kerkez who was out-muscled in the duel!

Watch in UK:

55th min: Newcastle are, for the moment, down to nine men as Sandro Tonali has to go off with a shoulder problem after being shoved to the ground by Hugo Ekitike off the ball. He comes back on for now, but looks to be struggling as he grabs his shoulder over and over during the stoppage.

48th min: There’s a VERY contentious no-call which angers the Newcastle faithful as Bruno Guimaraes is felled by Ibrahima Konate just outside the Liverpool penalty area, yet Simon Hooper somehow lets play continue! Guimaraes is INCENSED that nothing has been given, both because it could have been a last-man foul and because Konate is already on a yellow card.

In truth, it’s a complete mystery how Hooper has let that go, and Guimaraes absolutely has a case to be made, but his angry protests are too much for the referee, and he instead is the one who goes into the book! Newcastle will feel the refreeing in this match has gone against them at every turn!

46th min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL! HUGO EKITIKE STRIKES JUST SECONDS INTO THE SECOND HALF!

Liverpool counter with their first touch of the half, and after an initial shot from Cody Gakpo at the top of the penalty area is blocked, the rebound falls straight to Ekitike who from 17 yards out cannons the ball into the back of the net!

The goal comes so early in the half that Arne Slot hadn’t even emerged from the tunnel to witness it!

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way on Tyneside, with Newcastle trailing a goal and a man. The performance was so strong through the first 30 minutes, leaving Eddie Howe with a blueprint for how they can get back into the match even given the sending off. Yet the Magpies will have to defend with bravery to keep the deficit where it is and avoid being overwhelmed.

HALFTIME: Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool

Well, Newcastle completely dominated most of the first half and were the better side through the first 30 minutes, but find themselves down a goal and down a man as the halftime whistle blows! How has it all gone so wrong?

The Magpies failed to take advantage of numerous chances in front of goal, and then Ryan Gravenberch’s goal from nothing changed the game completely. Liverpool were completely scattered as Newcastle pinned them in and forced a host of errors, but the Reds weathered the storm and snatched the lead.

Then, the physicality turned on Newcastle as well, as Anthony Gordon received a late red card for a very silly and needless tackle on Virgil van Dijk, which has left a mountain for the hosts to climb. The Magpies had been using the game’s needle to their advantage, but it ultimately may be their downfall!

45th min: Seconds after Dan Burn receives yellow, Anthony Gordon will also be booked as he fouls Virgil van Dijk, sparking a flashpoint between the two players. He rakes the side of van Dijk’s leg as the Dutchman releases the ball. This could be upgraded to a red card…..

Sure enough, Simon Hooper is sent to the monitor by the VAR official and……RED CARD! NEWCASTLE! GORDON IS SENT OFF! He’s caught van Dijk’s standing leg with the tip of his studs. It’s not the nastiest challenge we’ve ever seen, but it’s enough at high speed to see the referee show a red card! He can have no complaints, it’s very late and very dangerous!

“The Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge,” Hooper explains over the St. James’ Park PA system. “The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4’s calf.”

Watch in USA:

Watch in UK:

44th min: Dan Burn is the first Newcastle player to earn a yellow card in this match as he hacks at Mohamed Salah out on the touchline. It’s a very nasty kick at Salah’s leg as he swipes at a bouncing ball and completely whiffs.

35th min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL! THE VISITORS HAVE SCORED AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY, AND TOTALLY OUT OF NOTHING!

Ryan Gravenberch takes a shot nobody expected, including Nick Pope, and the Newcastle goalkeeper can only watch the ball skid by him to his right! It clips the inside of the post and goes in, maybe with a slight deflection off Bruno Guimaraes or Fabian Schar on the way through!

Watch in USA:

Watch in UK:

32nd min: Chance, Newcastle! Oh dear, Ibrahima Konate makes an enormous mistake in midfield to give the ball away and concede a huge Newcastle chance, but Alisson comes off his line to snatch the ball eight yards from goal before any Magpies attacker can unleash a shot!

Liverpool are ALL OVER the place at the moment, but Newcastle have not been able to take advantage!

28th min: Chance, Newcastle! Anthony Gordon comes SOOOOO close to opening the scoring! He rises high to meet a Harvey Barnes cross from the left and heads it just inches over the crossbar! Newcastle have looked the better side here so far!

Shortly after, Gordon has two more half-chances in front of goal, as they continue to prove a menace for the Liverpool defenders. How have they not scored yet?? They must take advantage of this positive spell!

26th min: Now Ibrahima Konate becomes the second Liverpool player booked early in this match after he yanks back Anthony Gordon. Newcastle forwards have been a menace for Liverpool to handle as they attack both out wide and through the middle.

16th min: Chance, Newcastle! WHAT AN INTERVENTION BY STAND-IN RIGHT-BACK DOMINIC SZOBOSZLAI! Anthony Elanga is free in behind down the right, latching onto a long ball, and his cutback was threatening for a finish, but Szoboszlai gets the slightest of touches to send it fizzing by the pack with no finishing touch!

14th min: Chance, Liverpool! Fabian Schar gives the ball away in a terrible position, passing it right to Hugo Ekitike at the top-left corner of the penalty area. He feeds it right to Florian Wirtz who attempts a curler destined for the top-right corner of the net, but Nick Pope dives at full stretch to make the save!

8th min: Ryan Gravenberch picks up a very early yellow card as the Dutchman gives the ball away and then cuts down Bruno Guimaraes with a dangerous tackle. A deserved booking for a reckless foul, and he will have to be careful the rest of the way.

The match has been testy from the start, with both sides displaying plenty of intent as well as plenty of needle.

Kickoff: They’re under way at St. James’ Park, one of the most hostile venues in the Premier League! Of course, just before kickoff, a curiously-timed story has broken about Newcastle ownership meeting with Alexander Isak this morning and opening up the possibility of a future with the club.

Yet for now, all eyes are on the match at hand in Tyneside, where the Newcastle fans have made a clear statement with a tifo that reads “Nothing is achieved alone. We are a city, a whole population. We are Newcastle United.”

Newcastle vs. Liverpool: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Newcastle are still desperate to make attacking additions to the squad, but they do have Jacob Ramsey who could make his debut today. Will we see the former Aston Villa man? Kickoff is right around the corner!

30 mins to kickoff: Despite Newcastle’s struggles in recent years to get a result against today’s opponent, they have been part of some gripping fixtures against the Reds. These two sides played to a thrilling 3-3 draw last season, a game in which both sides led at various stages. Fabian Schar delivered a thumping 90th-minute equaliser to level the score.

45 mins to kickoff: Newcastle fans already have the boo birds out, letting Hugo Ekitike hear it as his name is read off amongst the lineups. Ekitike was heavily linked to Newcastle before Liverpool swooped in to snatch him up, complicating a potential Alexander Isak deal for both sides.

1 hour to kickoff: According to reports, it will be Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back for Liverpool as anticipated, with Curtis Jones in midfield in place of Alexis Mac Allister.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in! Joe Gomez is not included in the Liverpool XI, while both Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai are. Thus, it’s impossible to tell from just the listed eleven players who will start at right-back, and further information will need to be gathered before kickoff to know exactly who is playing where.

Alexis Mac Allister is not in the Liverpool squad, which is a surprise as he is still not fully ramped up from a limited preseason.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Newcastle may have beaten Liverpool in the EFL Cup final to conclude last season, but they have had very little luck against the Reds in recent Premier League meetings. The Magpies have not beaten Liverpool in a league match since December of 2015, with 17 straight winless results in the time since.

1 hour 45 mins to kick: According to reports, Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, who is in charge of the Saudi PIF, will be in attendance at St. James’ Park tonight for the first time since February.

2 hours to kickoff: While thoughts of Alexander Isak dance in Liverpool fans’ heads, the more immediate concern is to the right-back position, where one Red will be forced to deputise in today’s match.

Liverpool brought in Jeremie Frimpong to replace the departed Trent Alexander-Arnold, but he has picked up a hamstring injury, sidelining him until after the international break. His backup Conor Bradley was injured in preseason and is not quite ready to return.

Thus, either Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai will likely be picked to play the position, and it remains to be seen how Arne Slot will play things. Joe Gomez could factor in too, but Slot admitted publicly that the oft-injured defender may not be ready for 90 minutes.

Newcastle vs. Liverpool lineups, team news

With Alexander Isak still frozen out of the squad as he pushed for a move to today’s opponents, Newcastle are without a true striker in the available squad. It means Anthony Gordon will likely continue to lead the line, as the Magpies still struggle to generate attacking volume.

The only injury concern for Newcastle is Joe Willock who has returned to the bench after an ankle issue.

Newcastle starting lineup (4-3-3): Pope (GK) — Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento — Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton — Elanga, Gordon, Barnes.

Newcastle subs: Ramsdale (GK), Hall, Botman, Thiaw, Osula, Murphy, Willock, Ramsey, Miley.

The biggest headache for Arne Slot early in the season is at right-back, as Jeremie Frimpong picked up a hamstring injury which will keep him out of action until after the international break, while Conor Bradley is only fit enough for the bench.

It likely means Dominik Szoboszlai has been selected to deputise at the position until one of the aforementioned two can return. Joe Gomez could factor in off the bench too, but Slot admitted publicly that the oft-injured defender may not be ready for serious action.

Alexis Mac Allister is a surprise absence from the matchday squad, still yet to ramp himself up from a limited preseason, with Curtis Jones in his place.

Liverpool starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Alisson (GK) — Szoboszlai, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez — Gravenberch, Jones — Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo — Ekitike.

Liverpool subs: Mamardashvili (GK), Gomez, Leoni, Bradley, Robertson, Endo, Elliott, Chiesa, Ngumoha.
