Newcastle vs. Arsenal lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Joelinton a doubt, Nwaneri could start 2nd leg

Newcastle United host Arsenal in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe’s team claimed an impressive 2-0 victory at Emirates Stadium last month to take control of the tie, and they know that avoiding defeat by two goals or more will see them through to the final of the competition for the second time in three seasons.

The Gunners are in buoyant mood, though, having thrashed Premier League champions Manchester City 5-1 on Sunday. With Newcastle having lost their previous two league matches at home, Mikel Arteta and his players will be feeling more confident of overturning the aggregate deficit than they will have done a couple of weeks ago.

The Sporting News looks at the latest team news and predicted lineups for this fixture.

Joelinton is the big injury doubt for Newcastle, the Brazilian having been substituted during the Fulham loss with a knee complaint.

Winger Harvey Barnes is not yet ready to return from a thigh injury, and with Miguel Almiron having returned to MLS in the transfer window, the Magpies are looking a little bit light in terms of options.

However, there is a chance that Callum Wilson could be back after returning to training towards the end of last week.

Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are available again, having missed the first leg through suspension.

Newcastle United predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Dubravka (GK) — Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall — Guimaraes, Tonali, Willock — Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Injured: Joelinton (knee, doubt), Wilson (thigh, doubt), Barnes (thigh), Lascelles (knee)
Suspended: None

Arsenal are not likely to make too many changes from their thrashing of Man City, although Ethan Nwaneri could have earned a starting spot ahead of Leandro Trossard.

Bukayo Saka remains sidelined, along with Gabriel Jesus, while Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu are not expected back until later this month. Goalkeeper Neto is cup-tied, having played for Bournemouth in this competition early in the season.

Arsenal predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly — Odegaard, Partey, Rice — Martinelli, Havertz, Nwaneri

Injured: Saka (hamstring), Jesus (knee), White (knee), Tomiyasu (knee)
Suspended: None
Ineligible: Neto
