Newcastle United’s transfer push for £62.5M star suffers major setback

Newcastle United’s reported interested in Wolves’ Matheus Cunha has hit a potential roadblock, as Manchester United has emerged as the frontrunner for the Brazilian forward’s signature this summer, according to Talksport.

The Wolves star, who Newcastle have been monitoring closely, signed a new contract in January with a £62.5 million release clause. Newcastle officials have already made contact with Cunha’s camp, hoping that the potential allure of Champions League football and the chance to join fellow Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton at St. James’ Park may prove decisive.

However, Manchester United have aggressively inserted themselves into the race. Fabrizio Romano tweeted:

“Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing. Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd is aware of more clubs keen + £62.5m release clause available. Good feelings after initial contacts between Cunha and #MUFC.

“More on Matheus Cunha and Man United. The feeling between the player side and club side at the new meeting was very positive after the project was explained and the terms discussed. More meetings will be needed but Man United feel they’re leading the race for Cunha,” he added.

According to reports, the Red Devils have promised Cunha the No.10 role in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, which is a tantalizing proposition for the 25-year-old.

Newcastle’s recruitment team had earlier identified Cunha as an ideal addition to Eddie Howe’s squad after his impressive campaign with Wolves, where he’s netted 16 goals and provided 4 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.

Despite being positioned to offer Champions League football next season, the Magpies now face an uphill battle to convince Cunha that St. James’ Park should be his next home. Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have also registered interest in the versatile forward, making this one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas already.
