Newcastle United vs. Arsenal score: Premier League result, highlights, stats as Gabriel snatches massive win

Arsenal snatched a stunning victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park as Gabriel headed home a winner in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.

The Gunners knew this game was an opportunity to close the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool, who had slipped to a surprise defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday, yet their recent visits to the north east have not been enjoyable. The Magpies had won four of their previous five home games with Mikel Arteta’s side at home.

It looked as though things were once again going against the team from north London. Newcastle took the lead 34 minutes in through Nick Woltemade, who nodded home from six yards out from Sandro Tonali’s cross, all after Arsenal had seen a debatable penalty decision overturned following a collision between Nick Pope and Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal were accused of “playing with the handbrake on” in their recent loss to Liverpool and draw with Manchester City, but there was no such caution here. Arteta’s team were largely the better side and controlled proceedings throughout, with Newcastle’s impressive defensive shape keeping them at bay.

That was until the 84th minute, when substitute Mikel Merino glanced in a header from a Declan Rice cross after Arsenal played a very similar short-corner routine to the one Newcastle used to great effect in the first half.

It seemed as though Eddie Howe’s team would hold on for a point, but captain Martin Odegaard’s corner was met by Gabriel, who had risen above the Newcastle defenders and goalkeeper Pope to head into the unguarded net.

Arsenal’s celebrations showed how significant a result this could be, even this early in the season. They are now two points behind Liverpool, having shown that, this time, they are ready to capitalise on any missteps by the league leaders.

90+6 mins: GOAL! ARSENAL HAVE WON IT! Martinelli’s shot is blocked behind for a corner. Odegaard swings it in, left-footed, and Gabriel rises above everyone — even Pope — to head the ball into the net. What a massive goal that could prove to be!

90+5 mins: Great block from Thiaw! Odegaard plays a brilliant pass to Eze, but the Newcastle defender gets across to deny him a clear shot from a tight angle.

86 mins: No penalty! Anthony Elanga’s cross was blocked by Gabriel, who was sliding in, but the ball clearly strikes his raised arm. However, VAR deems Jarred Gillet’s call of no penalty was correct. Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall is given a yellow card for apparently disagreeing.

84 mins: GOAL! ARSENAL HAVE THEIR EQUALISER! It’s a substitute who gets it, but it’s not Odegaard — it’s Mikel Merino! Arsenal take a similar short corner to the one Newcastle used to open the scoring, Rice crosses towards the penalty spot, and Merino glances a header into the far corner beyond the static Pope.

42 mins: Arsenal have pinned Newcastle back for much of the remaining minutes of this half, but they can’t pick their way through. Every tackled won by Malick Thiaw, Gordon, Dan Burns and others has been cheered to the rafters.

34 mins: GOAL! NEWCASTLE LEAD! A short corner is worked between Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, and the latter crosses towards the six-yard box, where Nick Woltemade nods past David Raya and into the net. Arsenal want a foul for a push by Woltemade on Gabriel, but VAR says contact was minimal.

29 mins: Pope denies Eze! Riccardo Calafiori’s long throw is only half cleared. Eze smashes a half-volley towards goal from the edge of the box, but Pope is equal to it and parries the ball well clear.

25 mins: TROSSARD HITS THE POST! Arsenal have reacted well to the setback of that penalty call. A slick attacking move ends in Declan Rice feeding Leandro Trossard, whose powerful shot smacks off the woodwork, and Newcastle clear.

17 mins: PENALTY OVERTURNED! After a long, long look at the footage by VAR and the referee, the decision is that Pope got a touch on the ball, so there was no foul! You can see by the footage that the Newcastle goalkeeper got his toe to it. It’s a fair decision, and yet, you could also argue Gyokeres was going to score regardless of Pope’s touch on the ball before he took the striker out, and therefore a penalty should have been given. That’s a tough one. I’m sure everyone will agree in the end…

15 mins: PENALTY TO ARSENAL! Jacob Murphy’s poor backpass is pounced on by Viktor Gyokeres, and Pope brings the striker down. Or did he? It’s being checked…

12 mins: After a slow start, Newcastle have upped the ante here. Tino Livramento forces a corner after the home side turned over possession near the Gunners’ box. Arsenal have some defending to do.

4 mins: What a save from Nick Pope! Eze controls the ball really well with his right foot and fires towards the bottom corner with his left, but Newcastle’s keeper gets a hand down to the shot.

2 hours to kickoff: It seemed every Premier League title contender except Liverpool had started slowly, Arsenal included. So with the Reds finally blinking, and no more perfect clubs left in the English top flight, it is imperative that the Gunners snatch three points today and pull within two.

That will be a tough task indeed, as Eddie Howe has traditionally given Mikel Arteta fits. Even when Arsenal were at their best last season, they could not get results against Newcastle.

Howe looks to be sticking with the 3-5-2 he trialed during the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth last time out.

Newcastle are without Yoane Wissa, Fabian Schar, and Jacob Ramsey due to injuries, but Jacob Murphy has passed fit and comes in at wing-back.

Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton are all in the lineup despite logging at least an hour in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Arsenal’s injury list just keeps on ticking over, a frustrating new normal for Mikel Arteta over the last 18 months.

Piero Hincapie is the latest to pick up a new fitness issue, as a groin problem has ruled him out until after the October international break. Kai Havertz continues to work towards a comeback in about a month, while in-form Noni Madueke will miss a number of weeks due to a knee injury. The status of Martin Odegaard is fluid, as he works back from a recurrence of his shoulder issue.

Madueke’s injury likely means a run in the first-team for Eberechi Eze, although he starts in central midfield today. Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka flank Viktor Gyokeres in attack.
