Newcastle United launch contract push to secure midfield duo amid transfer speculation

Newcastle United are wasting no time in the race to secure the future of midfield stars Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali amid rising transfer interest in the pair.

As per reports from TBR Football, Newcastle want to remove the £100m [$132m] release clause in Guimaraes’ contract, which was signed last year. Despite the high figure in place, club insiders remain concerned it could be triggered.

Manchester City are rumoured to be ‘huge admirers’ of the Brazil international, and the financial muscle of the former Premier League and European champions makes them a credible threat.

Guimaraes cost Newcastle around £33m [$44m] back in January 2022, with that initial fee still rising due to performance-related add-ons.

The 27-year-old has since emerged as the club’s heartbeat and was appointed captain at the start of this season. The Magpies hierarchy view him as as a vital player in Eddie Howe system at St. James’ Park.

The report also confirms Newcastle are considering a new deal for Tonali. After missing last season due to a betting-related suspension, Tonali has delivered some outstanding performances this term.

His upturn in form has led to interest from Serie A duo Inter Milan and Juventus, who have informed his camp of their desire to bring him back to Italy.

Despite this, Newcastle are planning to reward the 25-year-old, who joined the club in a £55m [$73m] move from AC Milan in 2023, on a five-year contract.

Sandro Tonali hints at long-term Newcastle stay

Tonali has bolstered the club’s confident over convincing him on a renewal after recently hinting at his desire to commit to a long-term future with Howe’s squad.

In a behind-the-scenes video capturing his daily life on Tyneside, Tonali joked, “I don’t understand Geordie. I need four, five years more…” Despite ongoing interest from Italy, Tonali and his representatives have repeatedly dismissed exit rumors.
