Newcastle United in advanced talks to sign Bayern’s star in £40m overhaul

According to a report from Football Insiders, Newcastle United are working on a major defensive upgrade by signing Kim Min-jae from Bayern Munich for £40m this summer.

The Bayern star, who has faced some criticism this season after a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund on April 12, may be available as Bayern plans to offload several players in the upcoming transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s team is also keen on Kim due to injuries plaguing their defense.

Both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles have missed significant time. Lascelles has been out for over a year due to an ACL injury, leaving Fabian Schar and Dan Burn to carry the defensive load.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Kim has a strong chance to leave Bayern this summer if a good offer comes in.

“Kim Min-jae has concrete chances to leave Bayern in the summer in case of good proposal for both club/player. He’s not untouchable, as several clubs in Europe are informed on the situation. Understand Saudi Pro League clubs have also started inquiring about Kim,” said Romano.

After two quiet transfer windows focused on player sales for Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, Newcastle is set for a spending spree this summer.

They will have funds, especially if they secure Champions League qualification. The Magpies currently sit third in the Premier League with just four matches left.

Newcastle United interested in Marc Guehi again

The Magpies are also maintaining their interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, despite having multiple bids rejected last summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, “Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle remain all keen on signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as he’s been on their lists for months.

There’s also a possibility Guehi goes on free transfer in 2026 if a deal can’t be agreed this summer.”

Newcastle previously failed to sign the defender after Palace demanded a lofty £70 million for the England international following his impressive performances at Euro 2024, a figure Newcastle refused to meet.
