Newcastle United are looking to revamp their side and have identified Gabri Veiga as part of their summer midfield restructuring, as per a report from Foot Mercato.
The 22-year-old Spaniard, who was once touted as one of La Liga’s brightest talents, is currently on the books at Saudi side Al-Ahli.
Veiga left Celta Vigo in 2023 in a €40 million [$45m] move that raised eyebrows across Europe.
Just two years into his deal, set to run until June 2026, Newcastle have entered the race to bring him back to the European stage. Sources also indicate that Atletico Madrid have also made enquiries, while Celta are hoping for an emotional return of their academy graduate.
However, Celta’s hopes are hindered by financial constraints. The player’s current wages in the Saudi Pro League are said to be a significant obstacle, making a return to Balaidos a difficult proposition.
Newcastle, on the other hand, see Veiga as a low-risk, high-upside investment.
