There’s a lot of uncertainty around Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United as Liverpool are pushing to sign the Swedish star.
The 25-year-old has experienced a minor injury and has skipped the preseason tour. He is currently training in Spain in his former club Real Sociedad’s facilities.
While there were doubts that Isak went AWOL, Newcastle United have cleared the air by suggesting that they are aware about his whereabouts.
Things have taken a drastic turn since Liverpool tabled their first bid of £120m ($159m) for the 25-year-old and Newcastle United immediately turned it down holding their firm stance of not selling their main man.
The Magpies have tried convincing the Swede with new contract talks but he remains determined to join the Premier League champions this summer.
Recently, Eddie Howe shared an update on Isak’s future at the club, he shared his thoughts about the situation in the pre-match press conference ahead of their preseason clash against Spurs.
“I was made aware of a bid yesterday and that bid was turned down, all before I’d even heard about it,” Howe stated. “People back in England are dealing with the situation. I don’t know what happens next. From our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.

“In terms of trying to upset players and all that kind of stuff, from my perspective, we can only talk about our conduct. We try to do things in the right way. Signing players is always complex. We just try to do what we think is right. I can’t talk about other clubs, that’s not for me to say.”
“I know where he is, really, through the media. From that perspective, it’s difficult for me to go into any kind of detail. The situation is far from ideal and is quite complex.”
Newcastle United are already looking to sign Isak’s alternative
Amidst the transfer saga involving Isak, Newcastle United have been working on landing RB Leipzig’s star striker Benjamin Sesko.
The Slovenian star has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United as well after he scored 21 goals in the 2024/25 campaign for Leipzig.
As per some reports, the young Slovenian has chosen Newcastle over Manchester United as he prefers moving to a club that will offer him Champions League football.
While losing Isak will be a massive blow for the Magpies, Sesko isn’t someone who will be the Swede’s like-for-like replacement.
Standing at 6’5”, Sesko’s physical prowess gives him an edge over defenders, and he is also exceptional in aerial and ground duels.
His off-the ball movement and ball striking ability also makes him a great option for Newcastle United.
However, he is still young and unproven in the Premier League so it will be a risk but given the options available in the market this summer, he would be a sensible choice for the Magpies.
