Newcastle United have formally opened talks to sign Liverpool’s Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, as per reports from Liverpool journalist Matt Thielen.
The Magpies are one of several Premier League clubs that have lined up for Jota, which includes Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 28-year-old, who has scored 47 goals in 123 Premier League games since his 2020 switch from Wolves to Anfield, is viewed as a versatile, high-IQ forward and is seen as a solution to Newcastle’s thinning attacking line.
Newcastle’s interest isn’t new. Some sources say the club first asked about Jota in spring and were told it would take around £43 million [$57m] to land him, and that figure remains the benchmark for discussions, though complications remain if Liverpool choose to include Jota in broader negotiations involving Newcastle targets.

While Newcastle have been tracking Brighton’s Joao Pedro as their main forward target this summer, the 22-year-old Brazilian has stiff competition from Chelsea.
If the Magpies fail to land Pedro, Jota could emerge as the ideal fallback, one with big-game pedigree, flexibility, and Premier League know-how.

Liverpool could offer swap deals
Liverpool, meanwhile, are believed to be admirers of Newcastle’s record striker Alexander Isak, who scored 21 goals last season.
Reportedly, he is considered a top target for the Reds to lead their line, though Newcastle have slapped a massive £150–200 million [$201-269m] valuation on him that could price out the Reds.
According to the Anfield Watch, Liverpool are interested in Anthony Gordon as well, along with Isak, and are prepared to offer Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez, or even Jota himself could be offered in swap deals.
However, Newcastle remain firm, especially when it comes to parting with top talents.
